West Bengal Cabinet Approves Proposal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Chancellor Of All State-run Universities Officials
WB State Universities Chancellor: The West Bengal cabinet on Monday gave its approval to the proposal to replace Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as the Chancellor of all government universities in the state. Along with this, it has also given its approval to another proposal to remove the governor from the post of ‘visitor’ of private universities and to appoint the education minister of the state in his place. An official said that the cabinet has given its consent to make the chief minister the chancellor of all government universities, including agriculture and health universities. This proposal will be introduced in the form of a bill in the monsoon session of the Legislative Assembly starting from June 10.
These resolutions have to be passed as bills in the state assembly where the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) is in majority and the assent of the governor has to be taken before they can come into effect. Let us inform that, on 26 May, the state cabinet had passed a resolution to remove Governor Dhankhar and make Mamta the chancellor in his place.
The ongoing tussle between the state government and the governor
This step has been taken after the ongoing tussle between the state government and Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar over the appointment of vice-chancellors in universities. According to reports, Governor Dhankhar had earlier alleged that the state government had appointed several vice-chancellors without his consent.
Something similar happened in Tamil Nadu too.
Significantly, something similar happened in Tamil Nadu last month where a bill was passed that empowered the state government to assume the power to appoint vice-chancellors in universities instead of the governor. The Tamil Nadu Universities Law (Amendment) Act, 2022, and the Chennai University Act, 1923 (Chennai University (Amendment) Act, 2022) were passed on April 25, 2022, with “government” replacing “chancellor”. This move was also seen as a political struggle between the Governor and the DMK government led by MK Stalin in Tamil Nadu.
